Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?

By Kelley Electrical Contracting, LLC. Published October 16, 2026. Educational information, not a substitute for an on-site inspection.

Short answer: Breakers trip to protect against an overload, a short circuit or a ground fault. If it happens once after you ran too many devices, reset it. If it keeps happening, stop resetting and call a licensed electrician.

The three causes

Overload: too many devices on one circuit draw more current than the breaker is rated for. This is the most common cause and often happens with space heaters, hair dryers and kitchen appliances.

Short circuit: a hot wire touches a neutral or another hot wire, causing a sudden surge. The breaker usually trips instantly and may make a pop. This can come from damaged wiring or a faulty appliance.

Ground fault: current escapes to ground, often through moisture. GFCI and some breakers trip for this reason, and it is a shock hazard.

What you can safely try

Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker fully off and then on, and plug items back in one at a time. If a particular device trips it right away, stop using that device. Do not replace a breaker with a larger one. The wire is sized for the breaker, and a bigger breaker can let the wire overheat.

When to call an electrician

Call a licensed electrician if the breaker trips repeatedly, will not reset, feels hot, smells burnt, or if outlets or switches are warm or discolored. Frequent trips can point to a failing breaker, loose connections or wiring problems that need testing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a tripping breaker dangerous?

The breaker is doing its job, but repeated trips mean something is wrong. Don't keep resetting it.

Why does my breaker trip when it rains?

Moisture can cause a ground fault in outdoor outlets, fixtures or wiring. Have it inspected.

Can I just install a bigger breaker?

No. Wire size limits the breaker size. A larger breaker on small wire is a fire hazard.
